I've used NaliCity as a source for maps and knowledge
since 2000. In Nov. 2004, I applied to be a reviewer and they accepted me. I like reviewing; I get to practice my playing skills, mine new ideas, and figure
out how people accomplished certain effects in the editor.
In return, I hope that my reviews have helped people improve
their own skills.

| .....I
take reviewing very seriously. For me, reading a review of one of
my maps is one of the clearest indications of how well I'm progressing
as a mapper - both in terms of technical knowledge and in producing
a 'fun' map. In return, I feel I owe the mapper whose map I disect,
the same amount of attention and respect that I would want put into
a review of one of my maps.
.....As stated elsewhere, I review
maps for three main reasons. The first is so I keep playing the
game, because I'm afraid that if I don't, I could lose sight of
what is 'fun'. The second is to draw inspiration and knowledge from
new maps released. And finally, I hope to help out the community
in the same fashion they've helped me - to teach and learn.
.....Every reviewer has a different style and focus. In my reviews I
tend to concentrate on the overall thematic and visual aspect of
the map and discuss them in technical terms. To me, a map is the
fusion of an author's vision, and their skill manipulating software
to achieve that vision. So I like to focus on that the most. However,
everyone including myself that gameplay is more important. However,
it is the most subjective part of the review, and also the hardest
to describe. In my reviews, I like to give my general impressions
of the gameplay and point out 'tried and true' factors either done
well or badly and leave the detailed analysis to the player.
.....I'm very grateful to be reviewing for the community and I hope both
that all my reviews have been fair and balanced, and that I've helped
mappers improve their own skills. |
